LPSB Weekly Update 5th February 2021

Posted on: February 5th - 2021

Dear Families,

The irony of me sending you an email on our ‘Screen Free Friday’ is not lost on me, but I felt it was important to keep our regular line of communication open as we reach the end of another week of lockdown learning. I continue to be impressed with the levels of engagement from our students, and the attendance to live lessons which we monitor using our usual systems is extremely high. Many thanks for your ongoing support. Although there is not a lot of new information this week from central Government there are a few things to update you on.

Year 11 and 13 Exams

The consultation around the exams closed a week ago today. As yet there is no word on when the findings will be published although we anticipate it will be around the middle of February, but I will obviously keep you informed when we hear more. It is really important that Year 11 and 13 students continue to work as they have been as we will be looking to do some kind of assessments when they are back on site.

Remote learning

Thank you to those parents who contacted us to say that their sons / daughters are finding the workload tough. All feedback we receive is being relayed back to teachers who will be only too happy to extend deadlines or review the work they are setting if need be. Do keep in touch with us. Please keep encouraging your sons / daughters to maintain the school day routine and turn up to their virtual Form Period and lessons on time. Please can I remind you again of the absolute necessity of ensuring your sons / daughters also spend some time each day away from the screens and being active. If the weather permits I would urge all students to go outside during their 55 minute lunch break to get some fresh air and stretch their legs.

Emotional wellbeing

A reminder that our School Counsellor, Ms Bullen, is available to talk to students by phone as required if any students are feeling that the lockdown experience is getting too much for them. You can contact Ms Bullen at sbullen@lpsb.org.uk and she can signpost you to an appropriate means of support.

On-site provision for key worker and vulnerable students

Please can I ask once again that you only take advantage of our key worker provision if it is absolutely essential and you are not able to safely supervise your son / daughter at home. The number of students on site has risen this week and it is making the management of our site provision more challenging. Please let us know as usual through the office email if your son / daughter will be in next week so that we know who to expect. office@lpsb.org.uk

Some advanced notice that the school will be closed for the half term week so there will be no on-site provision for that week.

Year 10 parents evening

A reminder that our Year 10 Parents' Evening takes place next Tuesday (9th February) between 3:30 and 6:30pm. You should already have received telephone appointment times. Please contact the school using the office email address if this is not the case.

Sporting update - Langley Park Lockdown Challenges Week 4 – Keep it up!!

Well done to all the boys who once again got involved in the Langley Lockdown challenge last week. There was a welcome break for some from running events, as students got a chance to show off their individual skills in a ‘keepy-uppy’ inter form competition. Students could use any equipment they wanted and entries were received from a variety of sports – including table tennis, hockey, cricket, football – as well as a throwback to lockdown 1 with some toilet roll keepy-uppies!  Pupils scored points for their form by keeping the ball up for as long as they could with additional points awarded for tricks such as ‘round the worlds’ and difficulty tariffs for the equipment used. Whilst the students showed some unbelievable ‘tekkers’, this challenge was a nightmare for Mr Brennan to adjudicate with some videos arriving that were over 13 minutes long!  It was great to see so much talent in such a wide range of sports, and it is clear to see that our young sportsmen are working so hard to keep up their skills during the lockdown period….Thank you to everyone who sent in their videos. A full round up of all of the week’s sporting events can be found in the attached document.

Year 7 - An Evening of Poetry and Music

This evening we are delighted to invite you to enjoy our performance of poetry and music from our Year 7 students which can be viewed at any time from 6pm onwards by clicking on the following YouTube link: https://youtu.be/AdI6Ek-kyF8. In English, the Year 7 students have been learning about poetry and were asked to showcase their own poetry writing skills in a competition. Every student in the year group was asked to write a short, personal poem on the topic of ‘Life After Lockdown’ – and were encouraged to capture an optimistic, hopeful view of the future. The poems being performed this evening were selected by the English Department for this event and have been interspersed with a variety of musical performances from students in Year 7 who were selected by their instrumental teachers or the music department. It is great to showcase the work of our youngest students and we hope you enjoy these performances – they will remain on the site for the next month.
